Compressed air dryer service and repair

The dryer decides whether there is water in your compressed air line. Its failure means moisture in tools, pipework corrosion and rejects in production. We service refrigerant and desiccant dryers from various manufacturers, from diagnostics and refrigerant and desiccant dryer repair to periodic inspections and sizing a new unit.

We check the dryer together with the machine whenever a plant orders screw compressor service since the dew point also depends on the condition of the compressor itself and its cooling.

Refrigerant and desiccant dryers - the differences and typical faults

    Refrigerant dryers

Dew point of about +3 degrees C, the standard in typical pneumatics. Most common faults: the refrigeration circuit (refrigeration compressor, refrigerant, fan), a non-working condensate drain and a fouled or leaking heat exchanger.

    Desiccant dryers

Dew point of minus 40 degrees C or lower, for processes that need very dry air. Most common faults: worn desiccant, the column switching valves and the regeneration cycle control.

Desiccant dryers - classified by how the desiccant bed is regenerated

    Cold-regenerated (heatless)

The desiccant bed is regenerated with part of the already dried compressed air, typically a low double-digit percentage of the flow. A simple and reliable design, typical for smaller and medium flows. Most common faults: switching valves, exhaust silencers, worn desiccant and the cycle controller.

Heat-regenerated (with a heater, possibly with a blower)

The desiccant bed is regenerated with hot air, so the compressed air used for regeneration is much lower, a cost-effective solution at larger flows. Most common faults: the heater, the blower, temperature sensors, valves and cycle control.

We service both types: regeneration cycle diagnostics, desiccant replacement, heater and valve repair and dew point verification after service. We also size new units, including Hertz HRD and HDA dryers from the Hertz Kompressoren range, for which we are an authorized distributor.

    Signs of a dryer problem

Water at the points of use

Condensate in hoses, tools and cylinders, moisture visible at the outlets even with the dryer running.

    Rising dew point

The dew point reading climbs above the value your process requires, meaning the dryer cannot keep up or is malfunctioning.

    Icing or overheating

Frost on the heat exchanger, or the opposite, a hot casing and high operating temperature. Both symptoms point to the refrigeration circuit.

    Continuous purging

A desiccant dryer that keeps venting air for regeneration, or a condensate drain that blows continuously, is a real compressed air loss.

    What we do

    • On-site dryer diagnostics and repair: measuring operating parameters, checking the refrigeration circuit, controls and switching valves.
    • Periodic inspections combined with the compressor inspection, so one visit covers the whole compressor room.
    • Desiccant replacement in desiccant dryers and regeneration cycle adjustment, to reduce the air used for purging.
    • Heat exchanger cleaning and condensate drain repair, the most common cause of water in the line in a dryer that looks fine at first glance.
    • Sizing a new dryer to the flow, pressure and required dew point when repair is not cost-effective, for both refrigerant and desiccant dryers.
    • We complete the system with the right compressed air filtration and treatment because a dryer without proper filtration and separation cannot maintain the required air quality class.

    Dryer service - FAQ

The most common questions about inspections, repairs and sizing of compressed air dryers.

Ideally together with the compressor inspection, at least once a year. We then check the condensate drain, the condition of the heat exchanger and the operating parameters, and for desiccant dryers also the regeneration cycle.

The way the desiccant bed is regenerated. The cold-regenerated version is simpler and cheaper to buy, but it uses part of the dried compressed air for regeneration. The heat-regenerated version regenerates the bed with heated air, so it saves compressed air and at larger flows is usually cheaper to run.

The most common causes are the dryer being overloaded with a flow higher than its design value, a fouled heat exchanger and a non-working condensate drain that pushes water back into the network. Diagnostics show which of these causes applies to you.

That depends on the age of the unit and the cost of parts. After the diagnosis we tell you honestly whether the repair makes sense or whether sizing a new dryer for the current flow works out cheaper.

Yes. We size the dryer to the actual flow, working pressure and required dew point, without replacing the compressor.
