How to choose a compressor for a production plant?
A practical guide to compressor selection: calculating air demand, choosing between screw and piston types, and the most common mistakes.
Step 1: Calculate your compressed air demand
Before buying a compressor, you need to know how much air you require. Sum up the consumption of all receivers:
- Pneumatic tools - 100 to 500 l/min each
- Production machines - per manufacturer specifications
- Cleaning systems - 200-400 l/min
Important: Add a 20-30% reserve for future expansion and peak demand.
Step 2: Determine the required pressure
Most industrial applications require 6-8 bar. Check what pressure your equipment needs and choose a compressor with an appropriate margin (0.5-1 bar).
Step 3: Screw or piston compressor?
Screw compressor:
- ✅ Continuous operation
- ✅ Longer lifespan
- ✅ Quieter operation
- ❌ Higher purchase price
Piston compressor:
- ✅ Lower price
- ✅ Better for intermittent use
- ❌ Noisier
- ❌ More frequent servicing
Rule of thumb: If the compressor runs more than 4 hours a day - choose a screw type.
Step 4: Don't forget about the dryer
Moisture in compressed air is enemy number one. Depending on the application, choose:
- Refrigerated dryer - suitable for most applications
- Desiccant dryer - for the food and pharmaceutical industries
Most common selection mistakes
- Undersized compressor - operates at its limits and wears out quickly
- No power reserve - problems when expanding the plant
- Ignoring operating costs - a cheaper compressor can be more expensive to run
